Overview of Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek

If you are seeking an adventure trek in the mountains with less crowd and pristine trek quality, this one is definitely for you. Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek quickly leads you to the beautiful and famous Mt. Ama Dablam base while offering you a less crowded trail and enough time to indulge in nature. When talking about trekking in the Everest Region, people only think of Everest Base Camp Trek; due to growing hype and popularity, the trail may be crowded, which may cause a loss of the essence of the trek. So this is the alternative trek in the Everest Region.

Ama Dablam Base Camp Trekking allows you to take a slightly different trail while offering a less-crowded trail and more time to connect with nature. The course is moderate and presents a breathtaking landscape and tempting views of the Himalayas.

Mt. Ama Dablam is one of the very famous mountains of Nepal, standing 6,812 meters above sea level. Ama Dablam means “Mother’s Necklace,” and Sherpa women wear it. The long ridges on each side look like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier is considered Dablam, the traditional double-pendant containing pictures of the gods worn by Sherpa women.

The trek is filled with adventure as we walk through steep snow, ice, and rocky slopes to reach the base camp. You will visit the delightful Sherpa villages of Khumbu and witness the beautiful local Buddhist monasteries. The trek takes you to the heart of Sherpa, a land with authentic Sherpa culture.

Our 13-day journey begins with a 40-minute flight from the capital, Kathmandu, to Lukla airport, with a spectacular view of mountains above the clouds. Then, we will head off to Pharding with a delightful start. We walk past the dense forest of Sagarmatha National Park, which has plenty of natural beauty and wildlife. We reach Namche Bazaar, also known as the gateway to Everest.

After our visit to Namche, we visited the famous monastery of Thyangboche, with its fine views of Everest, and we continued to the pretty village of Pangboche. From Pangboche, we will ascend to the foot of one of the most loved mountains of the Everest region, Ama Dablam, where the Ama Dablam Base Camp is located. This is away from the popular trail to savour the wonder of the Himalayas. The traditional Sherpa village of Khumjung shows the Sherpa lifestyle and the so-called Yeti scalp in a monastery.

After reaching Ama Dablam, we will return to Namche Bazaar, where we spend the overnight. The next day, we will hike downwards to Phakding and then towards Lukla, where we stay in a three-star hotel. We will return to Kathmandu the following day, concluding our Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek.

Where is Ama Dablam located?

Ama Dablam is a world-renowned mountain in the Koshi Province in the eastern Himalayan range in Nepal. The lower western peak is 6170m, whereas the central peak is 6812m. Ama Dablam Mountain looks like the mother carrying her child and playing with her necklace. Ama in Nepali is referred to as a mother, and Dablam means necklace, giving the mountain its correct meaning.

The mountain ridges look like a mother holding a child, and a glacier passing through the mountain looks like a bright necklace. Due to its geographical structure that divides different regions of Khumbu, it is widely recognised as the Matterhorn of the Himalayas. The importance of Ama Dablam mountain has been highlighted in the history, culture, and traditions by featuring it in the one rupee note, which is quite common.

Ama Dablam was first climbed by three foreigners named Barry Bishop from the USA, Mike Ward from the UK, and MIke Gills from New Zealand on 13th March 1861. Among several mountain ranges, Ama Dablam Mountain is Nepal’s third most popular mountain peak, which is why its Base Camp is among the most travelled trekking destinations in the region.

Best Attractions in Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek

Ama Dablam Base Camp is one of the best trekking destinations in Nepal, as it falls inside the top five best trekking destinations among several other trekking routes. Plenty of attractions will make your arduous trekking journey worth it, so let’s get into them.

Namche Bazaar

One of the main attractions you will encounter when trekking at Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek is the small town named Namche Bazaar, which acts as the resting place for the trekkers. In every Trekking program, including Ama Dablam, Namche Bazaar is the place for acclimatising to get used to the altitude and temperature of the Khumbu region.

Despite being a place for resting, you can always stroll around the town to find different places to explore. Some areas in Namche Bazaar are Sagarmatha National Park, Syangboche Airport, Namche Monastery, and Hotel Everest View. The Hotel Everest View lies a kilometre higher than Namche Bazaar, so early in the morning, you can head up to the hotel for breakfast and photography and return to Namche Bazaar to spend the night.

Pangboche

Pangboche or Tengboche is another famous village in the Khumbu region from which you can head towards the Ama Dablam Base Camp. In Pangboche, you will come across the tallest monastery in the world, Tengboche Monastery. From the peak of the Pangboche Monastery, you can see several impressive mountains like Tharmesu, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other mountain ranges. The Ama Dablam mountain is clear and visible from the monastery, fueling the fire for trekkers going to the base camp.

Paperwork and Documents needed for Amadablam Base Camp Trek

Trekkers must carry all the legal and required documents before trekking. Trekkers from foreign countries must have their passports, visa, and travel insurance at any destination. Along with their papers, they must also have permits to trek.

Look at some of the necessary permits to complete base camp treks.

TIms Card: Tims Card, also known as Trekkers Information Management System Cards, is made to keep the records of every trekker visiting different trekking destinations. The TIMS card is compulsory in every route apart from the restricted area. The TIMS card is made by the Association for Nepal Tourism Board and Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal to keep the information and the safety of the trekkers safe.

Sagarmatha National Park Permit: Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek is only possible if you can go through Sagarmatha National Park. So, to enter the said national park, you must issue the National Park Permit, which can be applied and received quickly if all of your documents are in order.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality Region Permit: Khumbu Region is the most common region for trekking. Many people who are either local or from different countries visit the Khumbu region for various trekking activities, making the route crowded. To make the Khumbu region less crowded and secure, the municipality has issued permits every trekker must give before going for the trek. The trekkers can also help local causes and social projects by assisting with their finances.

Day 3Flight to Lukla, Trek to Phakding(8,563ft, 2,610m)

Ama Dablam Base Camp trek starts from a scenic flight above the clouds overlooking the majestic view of mountains to Lukla from Kathmandu. We walk from Chaurikharka villages for approximately 3 hours to reach Phakding. Phakding, being the starting point for all Everest region treks, includes everything from gear and lodging to pool and restaurants. Here we will meet other trekkers who are going trekking in the Everest region. We can use our spare time to explore the majestic valley of Phakding. Also, some famous local monasteries (Rimishung Monastery) can be covered.

Day 4Trek from Phakding to Namche (11,290ft, 3,440m)

We start as early as possible, as our actual hike starts today. On a chilled morning, we start our hike amidst nature. Walking along the northern bank of the Dudh Koshi River, we will cross several suspension bridges embellished with prayer flags. The cheerful and vibrant color of the prayer flags all along the trail will make it remarkably exciting and appealing.

After a few hours of walking, we reach Monjo Village from where the Sagarmatha National Park starts. We get our permits registered there and follow the trail through a dense jungle. A tough climb awaits from here through the thick forest, where we slowly see the face of Mount Everest. As the mountains emerge, the path becomes more astonishing, making it easy to walk.

Day 5Rest day and acclimatization at Namche Bazaar

As the air is thinning, we take an acclimatization break at Namche. Today is a rest day so we will relax and explore Namche. Namche Bazaar, also known as the gateway to Everest, is tucked away between two ridges amidst the giant peaks of the Khumbu and has an abundance of lodges, tea shops, and souvenir markets. It is an ideal place to spend a day acclimatizing to a higher altitude.

Day 6Trek from Namche to Deboche (12,533ft, 3,820m)

Today, we trek to Thyangboche, passing through several uphill and downhill walks. The splendid view of the Himalayas and the spotting of unique animals and birds will make the trek more exciting and easy. As we cross the Dudh Koshi river, we observe diverse plants and animals. We reach Phunki Tenga, where we can see the panoramic landscape of the village.

Presented with a picturesque view of the mountains like Everest(8,848m), Ama Dablam(6,812m), Lhotse(8,516), and Nuptse(7,861), Thamserku(6,623m), the trail leads to Tengboche Monastery. Also known as ‘Monastery on the top of the hill’, we will loosen up there for a while. After a tiresome walk, we relax with the peace offered by the sound of prayer and the peaceful ambiance of the place. We halt at Thyangboche and prepare for the next day with good food and sufficient rest.

Day 7Trek from Deboche to Dingboche(14,250ft, 4,360m)

Today, we head to our destination through the small village of Pangboche(3,985m). Passing by many Stupas, mani walls, and small villages, this path exposes a fascinating view of the Himalayas. We will witness the up-close view of Ama Dablam(6,812m) from here. The trek becomes lighter as we enter the Imja Valley following the Lobuche River. We descend to the river and climb a steep uphill towards Dingboche(4,360m).

The route is quite challenging due to higher elevations and the decreasing level of oxygen. As the oxygen level gets lower, we get tired very quickly while hiking uphill. Dingboche, also known as the summer valley, comprises a beautiful arrangement of fields enclosed by stone walls protecting crops like barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. The view from Dingboche is impressive with the Himalayas covering the entire valley. Truly this place will make you forget our problems.

Day 8Dingboche to Chhukung (15,580ft, 4,730m)

We begin our trek today early in the morning with chilled air and a dark blue sky. The beauty of landscapes will be amplified when the sun rises slowly making everything golden and mystical. The view will be breathtaking. A few hundred meters up from Dingboche, we get a stunning view of the entire valley. With a drop in the level of oxygen, it is a bit difficult to hike uphill, but the trail is somewhat easy.

We come across a Buddhist Stupa, with prayer flags stretching across to another one, on our way to Chhukung. If we manage to hike early, we may witness a remarkable view with the sun backlighting the stupa and flags, forming a warm, golden halo around them. With a comfortable walk, we reach Chhukung, where we spend two nights acclimatizing to the thinning air.

Day 9Rest day and acclimatization at Chhukung

Chhukung valley is full of wonders. The valley offers a majestic view of glaciers, rivers, lakes, and snowy mountains. The valley is also an alternative route for Everest Base Camp trekkers aimed at acclimatization. Once we reach Chukkung to see the snow and ice foundation in the mountains. We optionally hike up to Chukung Ri. It offers exceptional views of Mount Lhotse(8,516m), Island Peak(6,189m), Ama Dablam(6,812m), Makalu(8,463m), and others.

As a rest day, we do not remain idle, but stroll around the village and hike uphill and downhill. A blend of extraordinary landscapes and people, Chukkung will prove to be a great place to stay for adjusting to the increasing elevation and relaxing our core body.

Day 10Chhukung to Lobuche via Kongma La(18,159ft, 5,535m)

Today, we start our journey early in the morning. We cross through one of the most famous passes of the trek, the Kongma La pass(5,535m). It can be challenging with lots of heavy snow through the trail. As strenuous as the path becomes, the view enhances motivating us to accomplish our journey. Situated right behind Chukkung, we pass through a small stream that leads us to a landslide trail. Moving ahead of the steep trail, we come across a hill from where the view of Dingboche and Tengboche is breathtaking.

We hike onwards to reach a lake with an enchanting view of the mountains surrounding it. The last yet the hardest part of reaching Kongma La pass is undoubtedly worth it. We witness a panoramic view of the mountains and a distant view of Lobuche, where we will halt for the night. As we descend the trail, it gets tougher than ascending.

We climb up the moraine and then walk past the Khumbu glacier for an hour to reach Lobuche. The view from Lobuche is charming with Kala Patthar and Everest dazzling with the setting sun. The magical view of shimmering mountains will make us forget about the difficulty we had throughout the day and then we relax after a long day amidst the mountains.

Day 11Trek from Lobuche to Pangboche(13,075ft, 3,985m)

As we get closer to our destination, our excitement level rises and we get more eager and energized to accomplish our journey. With a fresh start early in the morning, we head towards Pangboche. With the captivating scenery and beautiful environment, our walk is more comforting than the previous day. With snow-capped mountains surrounding us as we walk through the rugged trail, we relish the beauty of the trail. We halt at Pangboche and prepare for our final ascent to the base of Ama Dablam

Day 12Pangboche to Ama Dablam Base Camp (1,6797ft, 5,120m)

Finally, this is the day we reach our destination. The way from Pangboche to Ama Dablam Base Camp features divine beauty while offering us a thrilling yet exciting experience. As we get closer to Ama Dablam, we can dive into the details of the mountain and understand the reason behind calling it ‘Mother’s Necklace”. For trekking and expedition enthusiasts, the Ama Dablam base camp trekking is one of the most sought-after and enjoyed alternatives to the Everest Base Camp trek.

We cross Imja Khola before starting with the ascent to Ama Dablam from Pangboche. Without even realizing the time, we reach the base camp. We explore the elegance of the place. The ravishing scenic beauty of Everest(8,848m), Amadablam(6,812m), Lhotse(8,516m), Kantega(6,782m), and other peaks will surely impress us.

After spending good quality time enjoying the beauty of the snow-capped mountains, we head back to Pangboche. We conclude our hike to Ama Dablam with a heart filled with fresh experiences and memories of the base camp. However, the trail back to our home awaits. We relax and get ready to head back after the successful completion of our trek.

Day 13Pangboche to Namche Bazaar (11,285ft, 3,440m)

The trail from Pangboche to Namche Bazaar is mostly downhill. We take the descent slow as we remember all our effort on the journey uphill. With the vibrant color of prayer flags and elegant Stupas, the tip of Mount Everest, and the back of Mount Lhotse, this path is a package of exceptional beauty. We halt at Namche Bazaar for this day and enjoy a variety of cuisines. The delicious cuisine and Sherpa hospitality are rewarding. Also, Namche is full of wonders we may have missed on our way up. We can visit the sites we skipped before and conclude the day with a fresh memory of Ama Dablam Base Camp.

Day 14Namche to Lukla (9,350ft, 2,850m)

We will begin our final day trek through small villages and narrow forests. We pass through the thrilling suspension bridges on our way back. We will finally reach Phakding after a gentle walk through Benkar. As we move ahead onto Lukla, we further reach a small village. Eventually, we reach Lukla following the path where we stay overnight. Lukla is the starting and ending point of our trek, and it will, without a doubt, make both the starting and ending wonderful. With Lukla’s handful of shops, bars, cafes, and even a faux Starbucks there are plenty of things to occupy our time as we reflect on our experience.

Day 15Fly back to Kathmandu

We leave for Kathmandu on a 40-minute scenic flight, with hearts filled with memories, experiences, and feelings of achievement. The way back from Lukla Airport, also known as the world’s most extreme airport, is remarkable. After 13 days of adventure, hardship, and togetherness, this is where we conclude our journey. Additional Information

Food and Accommodation

In any trekking, it is essential to be wary of the food and accommodation services you will receive during trekking. So, for your convenience, we have come up with detailed information.

Food and Drinks Options

Foods and drinks are incredibly essential for trekkers. It would be best if you were fatigued all the time. The food that you will receive is standard dishes cooked by skilled chefs and cooks who have several years of experience.

Generally, you can get local Nepali foods or eat Chinese, Thai, Italian, or Continental food. The foods are divided into three meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Breakfast

For breakfast, you will have local Tibetan bread, Chapati, Roti, Noodles Soup or Thukpa, Momos or Dumplings, Boiled and Scrambled Eggs, and hot drinks like Tea, Coffee, Milk, etc.

Lunch

After breakfast, you will be set for a few hours of trekking before lunch, which you can have either in teahouses or camp. Some basic lunch menus are Momos, Chowmein, Thukpa, Macaroni, Spaghetti, Burgers, Pizzas, and other eateries.

Dinner

Now it’s time for the final meal of the day, dinner, where you need a reasonably decent amount of energy to be energised for the next day and not heavy enough to make you sick. Some of the options available for the dinner menu are Nepali Dhal Bhat, Pizza, Burgers, Dumplings, Sandwiches, Chapati, Bread, Roti, Curry, Yak Steaks, Fresh Meat and Fish, and other different types of cuisines.

Now, look at the accommodation services you will receive during your Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek.

In case of accommodation, you will stay in three three-star hotels in the city area, but when you are trekking from village to village, you will stay in teahouses. The teahouses are reasonably small, but they are clean and hygienic. You will have access to an expansive room with 2-3 single beds, and if you are a single female traveller, you will be provided with a private room without any extra charges.

Since the night in the Khumbu region is very cold, you will receive thick bedsheets, blankets, pillows, and mattresses to sleep comfortably. The bathrooms are mostly attached to the rooms, but sometimes, you might have to share them with your friends at a higher altitude. The sinks must also be shared, but they must be kept clean and hygienic. You will receive a WIFI connection regarding the internet, but the connection could be more apparent due to the higher altitude. Hence, buying an Everest WIFI connection card for a smooth internet experience at a higher altitude is easier.
