Overview of Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri

Take a trip to the Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri on this 22-day trekking tour to the Khumbu Region of Nepal. From natural wonders to Sherpa culture and tradition, there’s so much to experience in the Everest region. Visitors will see Everest and other eight-thousanders in the area alongside one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, Ama Dablam. Besides, you’ll also get a taste of Sherpa’s hospitality, which represents their values.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hike to the Everest Base Camp starts with a long drive to Jiri, which is about 190 km far from the capital city, Kathmandu. Hike up to the village of Bhandar, and we’ll make our way to Sete the next day. Walk along the forest trail with rich flora and fauna. Ascend to the Lamjura Pass to get astounding views of the Mahalangur Mountain Range, and while descending, get to see the Dudh Kunda as well.

Along the way, we’ll encounter the Tibetan-influenced Sherpa Culture and architecture all over the region. Before making it to Lukla, where the Everest Base Camp Trek usually starts, we get past the Ringmo, Nunthala, Bupsa, and Surkhe villages. From the next day onwards, it’s the same as the typical EBC trek; we hike up to Phakding, then enter the UNESCO-listed world heritage site, Sagarmatha National Park, through Monjo before arriving in Namche Bazaar, the tourist hub of the region.

After a day’s acclimatisation there, we’ll see one of the oldest monasteries in the country in Tengboche. We’ll be at Dingboche the next day and take another day off to ensure we acclimate to the climate here. Before getting to the last settlement in Gorakshep before the glorious base camp, we’ll need to get past Dugh La and the village of Lobuche.

Finally, on the day of our ascent to EBC, we’ll first make a quick climb to the 5545-meter Kala Patthar and be in awe of the highest mountain in the world. After breakfast in Gorakshep, on the same day, we’ll navigate uphill to the base camp at 5364 meters. On our way back, we’ll hike down to Gorakshep and then to Periche. From Periche, we’ll walk towards Lukla via Namche to fly to Kathmandu.

This trail is difficult, even more strenuous than the typical EBC trek, but one thing’s for sure: we’ll get to experience much more. This Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri is designed for those who want to explore the Khumbu Region more and get in touch with nature at its best.

Where is Mount Everest Located?

Mount Everest, or Sagarmatha, is the highest peak in the world, located at a height of 8849m from sea level. It is located in the Solukhumbu district in the Khumbu municipality. Many people worldwide visit Nepal with the only goal of conquering Mount Everest.

Furthermore, many tourists worldwide are attracted just by trekking its base camp routes, which is also tricky. There are two ways of climbing Mt Everest, via Nepal or China. The border of Nepal and China runs through the summit as either border is divided into Nepal and Tibet. One of the fantastic views from the top of Mount Everest is the evergreen Khumbu Glacier, which always mesmerises the tourists or trekkers who have come to explore the base camp area.

Major Attractions of Everest Base Camp Trek Via Jiri

Everest Base Camp Trek Via Jiri is another way of trekking towards Everest Base Camp, and many unique attractions will make your trek and expenses worthwhile. So, let’s take a look at them.

Jiri

It had a population of over 13,000 as per the 2011 consensus, but the population has increased considerably since it has been over ten years. Despite being there for a day, Jiri is a phenomenal place for sightseeing, as you can see many places like Gurans Park, Sikri Valley, Stone Park, Chyordong Hill, and Lauti Jharana. There are many more sights and attractions in Jiri town, but for one day, these are enough.

Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar is a small town in the Khumbu region that acts as the rest stop for trekkers going towards the Everest Base Camp. It is one of the main towns of the Khumbu region, which consists of many tourist attractions like Syangboche Airport, Sagarmatha National Park, Sagarmatha Next Centre, Hotel Everest View, and others.

Since trekking occurs in higher altitudes, relentless winds, cold temperatures,s and rainfall are sometimes too harsh. Hence, planning the trek in the best possible season is essential. Generally, the Spring season is best to prepare for the Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri as there is less chance of rainfall and snow, but the cold temperature and high-speed wind are still consistent.

Relentless Walking

Furthermore, the route is more complex than you have to wander through barren lands and slippery terrains and climb snowcapped mountains daily. You have to climb altitude, which reduces oxygen levels and raises the temperature. Hence, the trekkers must be in top physical condition and have healthy, fit bodies to perform this excursion without any risk of getting tired all the time, injured, or ill. Hence, every trekker should be prepared for this trek months before it starts by exercising and running to get their body used to it.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is another significant trek difficulty that the trekkers generally face during the Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri. Altitude sickness is the illness that trekkers face at higher altitudes as the body feels a lack of oxygen, which is expected at higher altitudes. Generally, these types of sickness arise after an altitude of 3000m.

The symptoms of Altitude sickness are fatigue, fever, nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite, shortness of breath, and weakness. You can protect yourself from Altitude sickness by keeping yourself warm and maintaining heat by eating ginger tea, honey, and lemon tea. If your body shows signs of altitude sickness, you can get brief relief by taking different medicines that will give you enough time to lower altitude and get comfortable.
