Overview of Arun Valley Trek

Arun Valley is one of the most exquisite destinations in Nepal. Despite lying between the two highest mountains, Mount Everest and Mount Makalu, and being so close to the famous Sagarmatha National Park, the valley still hasn’t got as much limelight as it deserves. Arun Valley Trek Difficulties

The Arun Valley Trek is a moderately challenging route. But the trekkers will still have to ascend and descend on rocky and uneven terrain. Similarly, the route goes through remote areas of the region where the trail conditions can get tough. The route also goes through some high passes and may need to cross rivers. It is physically strenuous for trekkers as they will have to walk for 5 to 6 hours on average during the trek.The duration of the trek also ranges from 12 to 18 days. It can test any trekker’s physical endurance and stamina.

As trekkers move to higher elevations, the weather starts to get more uncertain and changes rapidly. So, one has to be prepared to face any weather and carry suitable clothing and equipment. The facilities and amenities are also limited. Sometimes, the remote location and unpredictable changes can mentally stress a person. So, trekkers need to practice mental resilience for mental preparation.

The high altitude is another difficult factor of the Arun Valley trek. The highest point of the trek is 3,173 meters. After 3,000 meters elevation, the oxygen level begins to drop in the air. It can cause trekkers altitude sickness. So, there is a risk of altitude sickness during the Arun Valley Trek. Therefore, proper acclimatization is required to minimize the risk. Gradual ascend, proper hydration, good rest, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco during the trek can also help decrease the risk of altitude sickness.

Itinerary

Day 1Kathmandu Arrival

Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal, where you’ll get settled in your hotel. After freshening up, meet the company representatives to discuss further the upcoming 16-day trek. After the discussion, you can either stroll around the city or rest for the time being. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2Trek preparation day and Kathmandu sightseeing

Today we prepare for the trek and check the last-minute checklist for trekking gear and if needed shopping around Thamel. After lunch visit Kathmandu’s UNESCO world heritage sites, Kathmandu Durbar Squire, Pashupatinath Temple, and Bouddhanath Stupa. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 3Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (450 m), 35 min

Our official trek starts today. We catch an early flight to Tumlingtar, which is a small town in eastern Nepal in the Sankhuwasabha district. We get to witness lush green hills, gorges, and the eastern Himalayas in this short flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. We spend the whole day exploring the town.

Day 4Trek from Tumlingtar to Kartike (300 m), 6 hrs.

We start our day after having our breakfast in Tumlingtar. We commence walking towards Kartike. We pass through small settlements of diverse cultural and ethnic communities. The village trail and vegetation round on the trail are more interesting. We follow the Arun river and walk through the sub-tropical forest to Kartike. Day 5Trek from Kartike to Gothe Bazaar (775 m), 5 hrs.

After having a warm breakfast, we start walking towards Gothe Bazaar leaving Kartike behind. Our trail today consists of terraced rice fields on the bank of Arun Koshi. We pass through the ridge, from where we can see an amazing view of the luxuriant Arun Valley. We then continue walking on the bank of Irkhuwa Khola and pass by banana farmland just before reaching the Gothe bazaar. Overnight at Gothe Bazaar (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6Trek from Gothe Bazaar to Dobhane (920 m), 3 hrs

We start our day with a warm breakfast in Gothe Bazaar. Our walk is easy and short today. We get to see the traditional stone-plated house and terraced farming with irrigation channels. We also can see Nepali paper factory production with the typical Nepali plant called Lokta. We cross the suspension bridge above Irkhuwa Khola before reaching Dobhane. Overnight at Dobhane (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7Trek from Dobhane to Phedi (1,680 m), 5 hrs.

We start our day with a warm breakfast in Dobhane. The trail is similar and full of authentic Nepal. We walk through terraced fields, bamboo bridges, and streams. We also come across many monasteries on the way to Phedi. Overnight (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8Trek from Phedi to Guranse (2,880 m), 5 hrs.

After having breakfast at Phedi, we leave for Guranse. We follow the trail to the upper Phedi. We see the spectacular view of Arun Valley. We hike for several hours until reaching Guranse. Overnight at Guranse. (Overnight at Dinner)

Day 9Trek from Guranse to Sanam (2,850 m), 5 hrs

Our day starts similarly. After having our breakfast at Guranse, we start heading towards Sanam, which is a tiny Sherpa village on the border side of Solukhumbu. We will also see Karylang Peak, and follow forest and streams. We get to experience the warm hospitality of the Sherpa community. Overnight at Sanam (Dinner, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 10Trek from Sanam to Bung (1,900 m) 3 and a half hrs.

Today is a short hike day. We walk downhill through the forest of rhododendron, brown oaks, sal, Sisau forest. We come across the paper factory, tea shops, and old Gumba. We enter the Makalu National Park entry fee. Overnight at Bung. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 11Trek from Bung to Surke La (3,085 m) 6 hrs.

Our day starts with a warm breakfast in Arun Valley. We then continue walking following the main trail. We pass through abundant chortens, prayer flags, and mani walls. We also circumambulate the monasteries we pass through. The way is steep downhill just before reaching Surke La. We then rest in our tea house. Overnight at Surke La (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 12Trek from Surke La to Gaikharka (2,300 m), 5 hrs.

We start our day with a warm breakfast at Surkhe La and head towards our today’s destination, Gaikharkha. Gaikharka literally means pastureland for cattle. And we can see many pasturelands en route. Just before reaching Gai kharka, we pass through the damp forest. Overnight at Gaikharka (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 13Trek from Gaikharka to Pangum (3,173 m) 6 hrs.

We start our day with a warm breakfast, at Gaikharka and follow the trail through the damp forest. We continue walking towards Hinku Khola and cross the suspension bridge. In our continuous walking, we will be able to see the up-close view of Mera peak. The beautiful village Shubuche can be seen, which has Tibetan influence. We then hike up to Pangum gompa, where we’ll spend our night. Overnight at Pangum (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 14Trek from Pangum to Paiyan (2,680 m) 6 hrs.

We start our day with a warm breakfast in Pangum and move forward to Paiyan leaving Pangum gompa behind us. We walk downhill to cross the Kari La Pass. (3145m). We walk through a rugged path before reaching Paiyan. Overnight a Paiyan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 15Trek from Paiyan to Lukla (2,820 m).

Today is our last day of trekking. We head towards Lukla after our breakfast. The walk is easy and non-strenuous and the trail is sandy. We will see many mountains and amazing landscapes throughout our walk today. Upon reaching Lukla, you can explore the Lukla Bazaar and do some local shopping. Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region trek. Overnight at Lukla (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 16Fly back to Kathmandu 1350m

We catch an early morning flight at Lukla and leave for Kathmandu. Lukla-Kathmandu is one of the most scenic flights as we can see a glimpse of snowy mountains, hills, rivers, and valleys. We will transfer you to the hotel, where you can rest. Or, you can stroll around the alleys of Thamel. In the evening, we will meet for the farewell dinner and talk about your experiences. Overnight at Kathmandu (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 17Final Departure

The trip ends, and our Airport Representative will drop you at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your final flight departure from Nepal.
